DISTRIBUTION: This species comes from Mexico
AQUARIUM CARE: This large livebearer is a keen algae eater, and if you can track it down, it will do a great job of keeping your tank algae-free. Furthermore it is said to eat duckweed - an invasive surface plant that plagues many a fishtank, although in our experience not as quickly as necessary. They are relatively simple to keep, thriving in most water conditions, although clean water with some current is preferred. Although most foods are accepted, a vegetable component to the diet is highly desireable. Females of the species, as is so often the case with livebearers, are slightly larger (and rounder) than males.
Ameca Splendens is best kept in a species tank, as it can bully other fish in a community tank. It could do well in a tank with other robust but peaceful species: catfish, certain barbs or Central American cichlids.
BREEDING: Like all livebearers, the female fish give birth to live young, in this case, however, the young are fewer in number and larger in size than most other species.

What fish are good community fish? There is no absolute answer to this, but in general a community tank should contain only species that will tolerate each others behaviour, are approximately the same size, eat the same foods, and accept the same water conditions. Hardy tank bred fish that have adapted somewhat to local water conditions, and have no special dietary requirements usually make good candidates
