(Other members of the genus Semaprochilodus)

ADULT SIZE: 25 cm

WATER CONDITIONS: Moderately soft and acidic

TEMPERATURE RANGE: 23-27 C

FOOD: Feed Semaprochilodus taeniurus a predominantly vegetarian diet

DISTRIBUTION: This species comes from Brazil

AQUARIUM CARE: This large Amazonian characin is a keen plant eater, and so any tank set-up should bear this in mind. A tank with hiding places is preferable, so some plastic plants may be required. A good diet includes plant matter and algae - in the wild stomachs are often full of mud. This is an important food fish for Amazon-dwellers. Probably better to leave such species to larger public aquaria.

BREEDING: Unknown in captivity. In their Amazonian home, they migrate from the tributaries to spawn in the Amazon itself, usually in shallower areas.
