How to look after
Ancistrus dolichopterus
Dolly pleco, L183
Kner, 1854

(Other members of the genus Ancistrus)

ADULT SIZE: 12 cm

WATER CONDITIONS: Not critical

TEMPERATURE RANGE: 23-28 C

FOOD: Feed Ancistrus dolichopterus a predominantly vegetarian diet. Although primarily vegetarian, it will take over foods, dried and frozen; will happily eat livefoods if it comes across them.

DISTRIBUTION: This species comes from Brazil

SEXUAL DIFFERENCES: The males tend to be larger with pronounced tentacles on their heads.

AQUARIUM CARE: A typical peacful catfish. Not too big, and quite suitable for most aquariums, particularly those with an Amazon style setup - well planted with sunken wood. Like all catfish it enjoys rasping on bogwood.

This is a fine community fish, in an appropriate tank, with other species of a similar size.

BREEDING: Easily spawned in captivity. The fry may require some attention in a clean tank, as they require microscopic algal life as a first food. Later, can be raised on algae tablets/wafers.
